How accurate is a gender blood test?

Laboratories quote over 99% accuracy from 10 weeks of pregnancy when a proper venous blood sample is taken. Accuracy depends heavily on sample quality, which is the main argument for a clinic draw rather than a home finger-prick kit — an insufficient or contaminated sample is the most common cause of an inconclusive or incorrect result.

How early can I have a gender blood test?

From 10 weeks of pregnancy. Before then there is often not enough of your baby's DNA circulating in your blood for the laboratory to give a reliable answer, so we ask you to wait until you have reached 10 weeks.

Can a gender blood test be wrong?

Accepted Answer

It can, though it is uncommon. The usual causes are testing too early, a poor-quality sample, or contamination from a male household member during a home collection. Taking the sample in clinic, by an experienced phlebotomist, removes the most common causes of error.

Does it work if I'm expecting twins?

Partly. If the test detects male DNA, at least one baby is a boy — but it cannot tell you whether both are. If no male DNA is detected, both babies are girls. We will explain this before you book so you know what the result can and cannot tell you.

How does the test work?

A small amount of your baby's DNA circulates in your bloodstream during pregnancy. The laboratory looks for Y-chromosome material in your blood sample: if it is present, you are expecting a boy; if it is absent, a girl.

How quickly do I get the result?

Results are usually back within a few working days and are sent to you securely by email. We can hold the result back if you would like it revealed at a gender reveal — just tell us when you book.

Do I need a GP referral?

No. You can book directly online and pay at the time of booking. There is nothing else to arrange.

What does the £109 include?
