During pregnancy, small fragments of your baby's DNA (cell-free fetal DNA) cross the placenta and circulate in your own bloodstream. From 6 weeks there is reliably enough for the laboratory to give a dependable answer — a simple venous blood sample is all that's needed to look for them.

Why a clinic draw, not a home kit
Laboratories quote over 99% accuracy from 6 weeks — but that assumes a good sample. Almost every incorrect gender blood test result traces back to how the sample was collected, not to the laboratory.

Six weeks is the earliest point at which there is reliably enough of your baby's DNA circulating in your bloodstream for the laboratory to give a dependable answer. Testing before then is the most common reason a gender blood test is wrong — it can miss Y-chromosome material that is there, and report a girl. We will not test earlier for that reason.
