What to expect at your blood test appointment

If you have not had a private blood test before, or if needles make you uneasy, knowing exactly what happens takes most of the worry out of it. Here is the whole appointment.

Before you come

• Check whether your test needs fasting. Cholesterol, lipid and glucose panels usually need 8–12 hours with water only. Your booking confirmation will tell you.
• Drink water beforehand unless you have been told not to. Being well hydrated makes veins easier to find and the whole thing quicker.
• Wear something with sleeves that push up easily.
• Bring photo ID if it is your first visit.

Arriving

Arrive a few minutes early. We will check your details and confirm which test you are booked in for. If anything has changed — or you have a question about whether it is the right test — this is the moment to say so.

The blood draw

You sit down, roll up your sleeve, and a phlebotomist places a soft band around your upper arm to make the vein easier to find. The needle itself takes a few seconds. Most people describe a brief scratch rather than pain.

Depending on the test, one or several small tubes are filled. Each is labelled in front of you before you leave the chair. A small plaster goes on, and that is it.

If you're nervous about needles

Tell us when you arrive — genuinely, it helps. We can have you lie down instead of sitting, work more slowly, and talk you through each step. Our phlebotomists take thousands of samples a year, including from people who find it very difficult and from patients with hard-to-find veins. Nobody minds.

The whole appointment is usually 10 to 15 minutes from walking in to walking out.

Afterwards

You can drive and go straight back to work. Keep the plaster on for a couple of hours. A small bruise is normal and fades within a few days.

Getting your results

Your sample goes to the laboratory the same day. Results come back securely by email with reference ranges, and anything outside the normal range is flagged clearly. If a result needs urgent attention, we call you rather than leaving it in your inbox.
