How much does a private blood test cost in the UK?
Prices run from around £39 to over £400 depending on how much is measured. Here's what drives the difference and what should be included.
Private blood testing has become far more accessible over the last few years, but pricing is inconsistent and often quoted in a way that leaves out part of what you will pay. This guide explains the ranges and what should be included.

What should be included in the price
- The appointment itself.
- The blood draw, taken by a trained phlebotomist.
- Laboratory analysis at an accredited laboratory.
- Your results, with reference ranges and anything abnormal flagged.
The most common hidden cost is the blood draw. Postal and home-kit providers advertise the analysis price only; if you cannot take your own sample — and for many tests you cannot — you pay a phlebotomist £35 to £50 on top.
Why the same test varies so much in price
- Number of markers measured. A full body screen is genuinely more laboratory work than a single vitamin D.
- Turnaround time. Same-day and urgent processing costs more.
- Whether a clinician reviews and interprets the result.
- Location. City-centre clinics generally charge more than regional ones.
Do you need a GP referral?
No. You can book any private blood test directly. If a result needs following up, you can share the report with your GP or a specialist.
Getting value for money
Buying the biggest panel available is rarely the best use of your money. A focused test that answers your actual question — persistent tiredness, thyroid symptoms, a family history you want checked — usually gives you something more useful than a hundred numbers with no context.
